Special thanks to Holley Brashear from Crumbcoat Bakery located in Linglestown for guest blogging tips on choosing the perfect wedding cake!

Many suggest the two most memorable things about a wedding is the bridal gown and the wedding cake.  You may be nodding your head in agreement or disagreement, however in any case, your wedding cake is another opportunity for you to express yourself and to share that personalization with loved ones.Crumbcoat_008_MelissaMcClainPhotography

Some Food for thought on choosing the perfect wedding cake:
*Incorporate your theme or design. Cruise the internet for current fashion trends- paying close attention to fabrics, patterns, and textures.  When something catches your eye, print a copy or pin to a Pinterest board to share with your pastry artist. Eventually, you’ll gravitate towards a trend in colors, designs, and forms.

*Look at wedding cakes in magazines and on the internet.  Don’t feel fearful to take inspiration from several cakes to create your vision.  Many couples choose to incorporate wedding decor influences, pops of color, or personalized elements into their wedding cake.  Some also choose to go in a completely different direction, designing the wedding cake with a completely separate decor.

*Check out http://design-seeds.com/ for coordinating color palettes.

*Look at your designer’s portfolio. With the recent expansion in the cake industry, cake designers can be found to fit every style and budget.  When considering a designer, look at photos of past works and talk to others who have used his/her service.  Reviews are also helpful and easily located on Wedding Wire, The Knot, or other planning sites.   Contact the designer to schedule a tasting, which will likely be a completely different experience from one another. Tastings will give you a chance to taste some of your favorite flavors and give you an idea of the quality of your wedding cake.  You should also get a feeling for the designer’s personality and vision, which is extremely important, as you’ll be working with him/her for an extensive period.

*Go to your tasting with ideas!  By the time of tasting, you’ll have spent countless hours looking through wedding magazines, watching Say Yes to the Dress, and probably have an extensive Pinterest board. Feel free to bring invitations, photos, swatches, or anything to help your designer get an idea of the look and feel you want to convey.  This is the fun part- collaborating to build a cake that is uniquely YOU!  Your  designer will likely sketch the cake to give you an idea of the elements that you choose.

Designing your wedding cake is a journey; enjoy the time creating memories that will last a lifetime!
